Overhaul and rewinding of a generator weighing over 30 tons
Our customer: Westag & Getalit AG
Westag & Getalit AG is one of Europe's leading manufacturers of wood-based products for building construction and interior design. One of its sites is located in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, where it manufactures a wide range of products, from doors and frames, kitchen worktops, and window sills to high-pressure laminate and solid surface panels and coated plywood panels.
The task:
A significant amount of steam is generated during the production process. This steam is fed into a turbine that is connected to a generator, thereby converting the steam into electrical energy. Measurements taken during the last inspection of the generator by Blumenbecker revealed that a total failure was imminent – a problem that could not be resolved on site. It was therefore decided to completely dismantle the generator during a turbine overhaul by M+M Turbinen-Technik GmbH and transport it to Blumenbecker for further diagnosis and any necessary repairs.

The service
Due to the impressive dimensions of the generator, a wall of the turbine hall had to be dismantled for transport, as the rotor alone weighs over ten tonnes. It then took precision work to unload the generator from the low-loader and place it in the Blumenbecker factory hall. For the return transport, the cooler with its cover was loaded separately from the generator and reassembled at Westag & Getalit. The work was carried out within precise time constraints, during which the rewinding and overhaul of the other components had to be completed. The general contractor was M+M Turbinen-Technik GmbH, which commissioned Blumenbecker to carry out the necessary work on the generator.
The advantages
Every day that the generator and turbine were not in operation meant immense downtime costs for Westag & Getalit. Thanks to precise and rigorous planning in advance, all work was completed by Blumenbecker on schedule.
Thanks to precise and rigorous planning in advance, we completed everything on schedule.
