Crane runway project for Finkernagel: Manufacture and installation of two crane systems
Customer: Fritz Finkernagel Drahtwerk GmbH & Co. KG
Project overview:
Blumenbecker planned, manufactured, and installed two parallel crane runways, including single-girder overhead traveling cranes, for the Fritz Finkernagel wire factory in the Sauerland region. The crane systems serve a newly constructed wire drawing plant and enable the production of wire in the size range from Ø 4.0 to 12.0 mm.
Project data:
| Crane type | 2 single-girder overhead traveling cranes |
| Load capacity | 4 tons per crane |
| Span | 9.23 meters |
| Crane runways | 2 double-girder crane runways with supporting structure |
| Steel structure | 15 tons |
| Dimensions | 20 m × 18.5 m × 5 m |
| Standards | DIN EN 1090-2 EXC 3, DIN EN 1993-6 |
Fritz Finkernagel Drahtwerk GmbH & Co. KG
Fritz Finkernagel Drahtwerk GmbH & Co. KG is an independent family business with almost 100 years of tradition. 3,000 tons of wire are produced every month. In addition, there are around 850 tools – all of the highest quality. The company, based in the Sauerland region, supplies cold heading wire and forming tools to suppliers in the automotive, construction, electrical, and mechanical engineering industries.
Qualified employees, state-of-the-art machines and equipment, surface testing using eddy currents, and consistent individual ring tracking make Fritz Finkernagel Drahtwerk GmbH & Co. KG one of the leading suppliers in its market segment.
The task
The company commissioned Blumenbecker with the planning, manufacture, and installation of the crane runway and two parallel crane systems. “The crane system will supply a newly constructed wire drawing plant, where wire in the dimensional range of Ø 4.0-12.0 mm can be produced in several forming stages using a downstream bending winder in various delivery forms,” explains Uwe Packruhn, Technical Manager at Finkernagel.
The service
Blumenbecker supplied two double-girder crane runways with supporting structure and two single-girder bridge cranes (4 t x 9.23 m) and carried out the work in accordance with DIN EN 1090-2 EXC 3 and DIN EN 1993-6.
Blumenbecker also provided engineering services, such as complete production drawings with layout and individual part drawings, and analytical verifications and calculations in accordance with DIN 15018 and 13001. Verifications of static strength, fatigue strength, and fatigue life of steel construction and machine components, operating instructions, and assembly planning were also included in the scope of delivery. Blumenbecker coordinated all production-related interfaces.
The order comprises a total of 15 tons of steel construction and measures 20 m x 18.5 m x 5 m.
The challenges:
The former warehouse is not very high. It was not possible to carry out the installation using a mobile crane. This meant that the service technicians had to work from below using a forklift truck, which required more maneuvering and dexterity.
In addition, there were important cable routes in the area of the crane runway that could not be relocated. The crane runway construction had to be adapted accordingly. It was also necessary to coordinate the working area of the new crane system with the layout of the wire drawing plant, which was not yet complete at the time the order was placed.
The implementation: Blumenbecker supplied the complete package consisting of structural engineering, crane runway, crane systems, conductor rail, and crane technology from a single source.
