Bin Picking Intelligent handling of randomly oriented parts
Reliable robotic picking without prior sorting
As the level of automation in manufacturing continues to increase, robots are increasingly required to perform tasks that were previously considered difficult to automate. One of these tasks is the handling of randomly oriented parts stored in bins, crates, or other containers in random positions and orientations.
In many production environments, it is economically and logistically advantageous to store parts without prior sorting. This eliminates the need for manual arrangement but creates a requirement for reliable picking and orientation of parts for subsequent processing. Traditional solutions such as singulators or vibratory feeders cannot always be applied, especially when dealing with dimensionally variable, delicate, or complex-shaped parts. This is where Bin Picking technology comes into play, enabling this process to be fully automated.
What is Bin Picking?
Bin Picking is a technology in which a robot collaborates with an industrial camera to identify randomly positioned parts. The robotic arm then picks individual items from a defined area (the scene) and, based on a preconfigured algorithm, accurately and systematically transfers them for further processing.
The parts may vary in shape and size, making this technology a versatile solution for a wide range of manufacturing processes. Bin Picking is commonly used, for example, to pick semi-finished parts from containers and precisely load them into machining or forming machines, as well as for palletizing and depalletizing applications.

Bin Picking as an integrated solution
Bin Picking is a complex robotic application that must be considered as a fully integrated system. Reliable operation is achieved through the interconnection of several key areas:
- 3D data acquisition
Selection of the optimal measurement method, vision technology, and resolution for varying lighting and surface conditions. - Part localization
Identification of the correct algorithm to determine the position and orientation of the part in 3D space. - Gripper design
Design of grippers tailored to the specific parts and application requirements. - Robot trajectory planning
Calculation of an efficient robot path and a collision‑free trajectory for the gripping tool. - Turnkey integrated solution
A complete robotic cell that combines all steps into a stable and fully functional system.
Vendor‑Independent solution
Bin Picking technology places high demands on real‑time data processing and precise robot motion control. Our solutions therefore employ advanced algorithms for collision‑free trajectory planning and continuous optimization during the manipulation process.
Thanks to our in‑house software development and extensive experience in integrating various robotic platforms, we offer solutions that are independent of any specific manufacturer. This allows us to design systems precisely according to customer requirements—from selecting the most suitable vision system to designing the optimal gripping tool.
Blumenbecker provides complete Bin Picking solution, covering the entire scope from concept design and gripper development to programming, system integration, and commissioning.
