Blumenbecker IPS Polska commissions cargo handling system at new Qatar airport
(Katowice, Polen) Blumenbecker IPS Polska Sp. z o.o starts into the new year with a major project, namely, the commissioning of a cargo handling system at New Doha International Airport (NDIA) in Qatar.
NDIA will be able to handle 12 million annual passengers at its opening. Upon final completion in 2020, it will be able to handle up to 60 million passengers annually.
Main contractor for the new cargo terminal of NDIA is the Loedige Industries Group, which will also deliver the cargo handling system. As subcontractor, Blumenbecker IPS Polska is responsible for the commissioning of the complete system.
“Some years ago we already commissioned a cargo handling system for Loedige at Hong Kong International Airport,” explains Dariusz Rybarski, managing director of Blumenbecker IPS Polska. “Due to the positive impression we made, Loedige asked us again to put in a bid for this new project, which we finally won against our competitors.”
The cargo handling system consists of about 120 PLCs (S7-300, S7-400), multipanels (MP177) and a supervisory logistics system (UOCS). The system is projected to work in fully automatic mode, with no people in the cargo building during normal operation. The UOCS system will automatically create a path for each container and distribute it to the PLCs as an order to transfer containers to their destinations. Multipanels will be used only for maintance purposes.
The whole system is split into two separate systems designed to handle different types of items. The ULD system is designated for handling the air freight containers (ULD - Unit Load Device) and consists of roller conveyors and transfer vehicles in horizontal and vertical directions. The consignment system is designated for the cages and boxes with bulk cargo and consists of chain conveyors and transfer vehicles in horizontal and vertical directions.
The Blumenbecker IPS team consists of 14 experienced engineers who will perform the full commissioning of the PLCs on site. Each commissioner will have a support team of 3-4 electricians. The duration of the commissioning will be about one year.
